What’s the last step buying a home after the sellers or their agent hands you over the keys to your new home?

You guessed it; incongruously, those keys will be in some waste-fill very soon. Why? Because you’re new home must have a new of new shoes, (set of door locks and deadbolts.)

I always recommend, even before you move a single box or start unloading stuff into your new home, getting in the car and driving to local hardware store for new locks for your new home is prudent. Don’t forget about all exterior doors, you should buy a set for every door – both door knob and deadbolt. You’ll mostly find stores selling the deadbolts in packaged sets anyways.  I recommend buying them keyed alike, if you are like me, the less keys the better.

And don’t forget about the garage, if there’s an automatic garage door opener, you should see on the actual unit there’s a keypad that makes it very easy to reset and reprogram the remotes. You never know who had an old garage door open, and you definitely don’t want unexpected visitors, especially if you have an attached garage. Don’t worry, you don’t have to have the owner’s manual, it is possible to check for a brand name and model number, then you can Google the manufacturer directly.
